Nantucket Lightship Baskets originated in the 19th century when sailors stationed on lightships (floating lighthouses) off Nantucket Island created these distinctive woven baskets to pass time during long watches. By the mid-20th century, these utilitarian baskets evolved into decorative purses with added wooden lids, often featuring scrimshaw or decorative plaques.
These handcrafted baskets are highly valued by collectors of American folk art and maritime artifacts. The distinctive craftsmanship, including the tight reed weaving, wooden base, and decorative lid makes them sought after for both their historical significance and artistic merit. Collectors particularly value signed pieces from known Nantucket basket makers. NOTE: the front latch is broken and needs repair. It appears one of the leather hinges for the lid has been repaired as it doesn’t match the other. Otherwise it’s a gorgeous piece. The repair work would be minimal. It probably could be an easy DIY project with just a little leather shoelace.
