Nantucket Lightship Baskets originated in the 19th century when sailors stationed on lightships (floating lighthouses) off Nantucket Island developed basket weaving to pass time during long watches. The distinctive tight weave and solid construction became hallmarks of these baskets, which evolved from utilitarian items to prized decorative pieces.
By the mid-20th century, these baskets were adapted into women's purses, often featuring decorative elements like the lid decoration seen here. Collectors and enthusiasts value these baskets for their craftsmanship, cultural heritage, and connection to maritime history. The addition of scrimshaw decoration increases both the artistic value and desirability among collectors of American folk art and maritime artifacts.
